Provincetown MA Real Estate

The Town of Provincetown was incorporated in 1727, but its history begins much earlier since its well protected harbor offered excellent protection from storms. The European explorer Gosnold recorded a stop in Provincetown as early as 1602 and the harbor was the site of the first landing of the Mayflower. The Pilgrims signed the Mayflower compact in the harbor, to codify the way in which they were going to administer the new colony they intended to establish.

Although rich fishing grounds resulted in the seasonal leasing of fisheries with licenses granted for bass, mackerel and cod fishing, the first permanent settlement didn't take place until 1700. Provincetown grew very slowly during the 18th century and its population fluctuated with the price of fish. Farming was of secondary importance and aside from the fishing industry, there were only some salt works and one mill. After the Revolution, the town boomed and its population rose 276.6% between 1790 and 1830.

Despite its relative lack of good farm land, by the middle of the 19th century, Provincetown had developed as the prime maritime, fishing and commercial center of the Cape. The Civil War, which destroyed so much New England business, only provided more markets for Provincetown's fish. Portuguese sailors, picked up by American ships in the Azores and Cape Verde Islands to fill out their crews, came to Provincetown to live and additional Portuguese immigrants had moved to town by the 19th century to work on the whaling boats and coastal fishing vessels. In 1875, there were 25 coastwise and 36 ocean vessels operating in town, more than any community in the state including Boston.

Provincetown was a bustling place with all of the ancillary maritime businesses operating, such as ship chandlers, shipwrights, sail makers, caulkers, riggers and blacksmiths. Today, the wealth of preserved historic buildings combines with the lure of the sea to support a huge tourist and summer home industry.

Imagine a time before antique homes were ''rehabilitated'' or ''renovated.'' Imagine discovering an untouched jewel, sparkling quietly in Provincetown's coveted east end Commercial Street neighborhood of Captain's homes, boathouses, beach cottages and sandy lanes. There is still one of those hard to find gems remaining, an untouched sprawling home, once several residences in one, on a large parcel of land with a private, enclosed rear garden, home to a two storey Carriage House and a broad front yard, with the expanded antique Cape set comfortably back from Commercial Street with a view to the bay. The main house offers 11 rooms, period correct with pantry, closets, nooks, crannies, double doors, wood flooring, original staircases and details at every turn, a surprise of antiquity with every glance paid. The bonus Carriage House in the back garden is ripe for conversion to a spacious artist's studio, home office, writing studio or gracious guest quarters. You won't be disappointed if you are a connoisseur of old Cape Cod style and New England architecture. Secure this untouched masterpiece today to preserve it for generations to come. You'll be proud to call this legacy property your home and you'll be the envy of your neighbors and a respected contributor to the very limited inventory of preserved antique Provincetown historic homes.

This unique West End property is brimming with centuries of lore. When built, the harbor and the beach were the main thoroughfare, and Commercial Street did not exist. This explains why the front of the house faces the water. Three chimneys converge just inside the front door to create an old fashioned ''Snug Harbor,'' where sailors and fishermen would stop in to warm up. Thought to have been built in the mid-1700s, the property is rumored to have been a safe house on the underground railroad. Amongst the owners through the years, a sea captain's family in the 1800s, a well-known artist in the 1900s and a string of successful restauranteurs beginning in the late 1970s, most recently the popular and acclaimed Martin House where Norman Mailer was a frequent patron. The conversion back to a residence began in 2010, with meticulous care taken to restore and preserve the rich history while updating all of the inner workings. Become part of this property's legacy as its next steward.

Provincetown's rich history has long been a major draw for those seeking a home on Cape Cod and this unique West End property is brimming with centuries of lore. When this house was built, before the construction of Commercial Street, the harbor and beach were the main thoroughfares. This history is reflected in the orientation of the home, with the front door facing the water. Just inside, three chimneys converge to create an old-fashioned ''Snug Harbor,'' where sailors and fishermen would stop in to warm up. Thought to have been built in the mid-1700s, the property is also rumored to have been a safe house on the underground railroad. Amongst the owners through the years were a sea captain's family in the 1800s, a well-known artist in the 1900s, and a string of successful restaurateurs beginning in the late 1970s. Most recently, the home was known as the popular and acclaimed Martin House where Norman Mailer was a frequent patron. The conversion back to a residence began in 2010, with meticulous care taken to restore and preserve the rich history while updating all of the inner workings. The moment you enter, you'll be enchanted and transported by the period details: golden pine flooring, beamed ceilings, several fireplaces, and wood-paneled walls that evoke a past era. As a nod to the many fine chefs who cooked there, the kitchen has been stunningly renovated and features custom-built cabinetry from England, a 6-burner with griddle/double-oven Thermador range, Fisher and Paykel dishwashers and SubZero refrigerator and wine fridge. Upstairs, find the primary suite plus two additional bedrooms, one with views of the water. Outside, a brick courtyard offers privacy with 1,200 sq. ft. of outdoor living space, complete with peeks of the harbor. Become part of this property's legacy as its next steward.
